Janey Butler’s Handpicked Artist, Sam Lock Series 1

Over the years of working in the design industry, Janey has worked incredibly hard to source Artists, who’s pieces work perfectly throughout her Interior Design projects. We often receive enquiries requesting information on how to purchase pieces of Artwork and Accessories, therefore the launch of Janey Butler Collections enabled access to these popular pieces.

Over the next coming weeks throughout our Journal Posts, we will be reviewing each Artist featured throughout the Collections in detail. Sharing detailed information and professional photographs, which showcase their fabulous pieces, which we are incredibly proud to exclusively represent within our website.

Sam Lock

Born in 1973 in London, Sam Lock works and lives in Brighton on the south coast of England. Lock earned his MA in Fine Art and MA in Art History from Edinburgh University in 1997, graduating with honours. During his training, he won a scholarship to stay in Rome, and investigate the relationship between history, archaeology and painting.  All his works are an exploration, a journey between and through layers, a build-up of moments in time and intuitions followed. The alchemy of the painting process transforms this time spent into a physical and tangible history that can be read as colour, texture, shape, structure. They are an invitation to become lost and tangled in their surface, to find something new each time you look and hold the gaze, to make a connection with the senses, paintings you feel. They whisper suggestions. Each work is a mystery and a contradiction that is at once solid and substantial yet elusive.

Lock paints viscerally. Using blowtorches and electric sanders as well as the brush, he ages and wears his canvasses down, making them seem all the more natural. At its core, his work conveys the passage of time; colours, movement and characters that are half-recalled, uncertain.

Sam pieces are exclusively available through the Janey Butler Collections website.

Lock is represented by prestigious galleries in the UK and Germany and is has work in notable collections here and abroad.  He has recently exhibited work at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the RWA Bristol and the Mall Galleries.  This year his representative gallery produced and published an extensive book on his work titled “Temporary” to coincide with his solo exhibitions at their galleries in South Kensington and Hampshire.
